  • Information on the Sewing Class

Our sewing group has been very busy the past couple of months--even with the bad weather and some illnesses.   We delivered 20 adult bibs and 20 catheter bag covers to Heritage Nursing Home in January and 5 lap quilts and 7 fidget quilts to North River Nursing Home this week.  Another 7 fidget quilts and a lap quilt were taken to North Park Nursing Center.  That is in addition to the 82 pillowcases we made for Riley Children's Hospital in Evansville in December.

Our final project for this season will be a repeat of the Little Dresses for Africa.  This was such an enjoyable experience for us last year, and several have asked about doing it again.  It takes about a little less than a yard of fabric (depending on the size of dress you choose) and a package of extra wide double fold bias tape.  I am attaching directions for making the dresses with and without elastic--you may choose either or both types.  You may feel free to add rick rack or lace or any kind of trim.  The fabric does need to be a cotton or cotton blend since these will be going to a warm climate.

Last year we mailed the completed dresses to Nancy Zieman in Wisconsin who shipped them to children in need in Africa.  This year we have been asked to help a group of sewers from Blue Grass Methodist Church who will be making little dresses to take to Honduras as part of a Christian Fellowship Medical Mission trip.  They also sew for several community projects and were concerned that they may not be able to complete as many dresses as they had hoped.  So I'm hoping we may be able to help them.

If you know of someone who would like to join us this month, please invite them.  If you (or someone you know) would like to sew but are unable to attend Sunday's sessions, you could certainly make the dress(es) at home.  If you have questions, feel free to call or email me.

P.S.  If you are presently working on a project and would like to work on that instead of, or before, making little dresses, please feel free to do so.
